MATT'S JUNE MUSIC REWIND...

July 08, 2023 by Matt Bates

June was another great month for indie, rock, ska, hardcore music in general releases!

Standouts: Jack Kays - BLOC PARTY - CLIFFDIVER

Jack Kays - Only joined TikTok a few weeks ago, but damn are their algorithms great. I thought this dude was a chef, but turns out he writes songs - and they are great! Check it out!

BLOC PARTY - One of my favorite bands of all time. STOKED they are playing and writing again - do yourself a favor and check out their entire catalog.

CLIFFDIVER - Wow. Insanely catchy and highly recommend! Also, I think there is like 15-16 band members in this band? I lost count. Check it out!

Check it all out on Spotify or Apple Music now!

MATT'S MAY MUSIC RECAP...

May 31, 2023 by Matt Bates

Well, it’s been 1,447 days since I posted anything on YourFriendMatt.com. Had to take a modest 3 years, 11 months, and 17 days off to clear my head.

Feel lost. But, we’re back. Here are some of the best alternative, rock, hardcore songs I found in May!

Standouts: Kid Lightning - Carney - No Pressure - Buggin

Kid Lightning - thought they sounded familiar and then I found out it was a mega-band of members from Save Face, Joyce Manor, and Mom Jeans. So, it better be good - and it is.

No Pressure - Lead by vocalist of The Story So Far. Way more punk and hardcore - but great.

Buggin - Wow. Female lead metal tough band, think GEL. Better yet - Philly based! Check it now.

Mike Carney - Long time friend and hippie. Great to watch him grow as a musician and never hold back. NJ guy too! Gotta love it!

Check it all out on Spotify or Apple Music now!

Records...

April 17, 2019 by Matt Bates

This past Record Store Day was incredible. I love the community vibe, the passion, and electricity that happens when a bunch of music lovers come together to celebrate their favorite music. Record Store Day 2019 celebrates the 10th year in a row I have been participating in the joys of selectively released and limited pressed selections from recording artists from all over the world. I have been able to celebrate Record Store Day in 3 different cities over the last decade and every year keeps getting better.

Here is the haul and some pictures of my buddy Alec and I celebrating at Record Surplus in Los Angeles!

TROC...

March 17, 2019 by Matt Bates

When I was younger all I wanted to do was be in a band. I saw Back to the Future at a young age and when Marty explodes back across the room from the amp he was standing in front of, I knew that is something I needed to do. Starting a band is one of the hardest and most rewarding events I reflect on from my life. Starting the band is just the first obstacle. After you eventually find friends who are as dedicated as you to practicing and sucking together, you have to then figure out how to play in front of people and get your music into peoples heads. When we started our first bands in the suburbs of Philadelphia we never thought we would get a chance to play venues in the city with some of the coolest bands and people we have ever met, especially not at The Troc. Playing The Troc was impossible in our young minds.

We worked our balls off playing everywhere we could as often as possible and one day we were finally given a shot to play some awesome venues. I remember playing The Troc balcony more times than I can count, in God knows how many bands, and loving every second of it. Through years of grinding, failure, setbacks, deaths, blood, sweat, and many tears, we eventually worked our way to playing the main stage. The Troc was a community where we all came together, all the misfits, to play our terrible songs to each other. My parents drove us down there to catch shows, and to watch us play. My dad has hauled more equipment in and out of that place than any stagehand I have ever met. If you have ever carried an 8x10 cabinet up those balcony stairs, you know what I am talking about.

It is sad to see the doors of The Troc closing for good, but I will always remember the incredible times there, all the incredible talent that has performed there that I had the privilege to see, all the incredible people there.

Later Troc, thanks for all the good times.

Groom...

July 08, 2018 by Matt Bates

"Dude, I have no idea what I am doing. What the hell is a Notch Lapel?" - Me.

Thank the gods for The Black Tux. They have put me at ease with this whole tux and groom thing. As a groom, I have no idea what I am doing. All I know is I want to look and feel as cool as James Bond when we get married. It's my wedding day. I deserve to look dope. I know this will probably sound odd, but I dread picking out clothing, trying stuff on, and trying to figure out what "look" I am going for. I just want to look cool, and I know Jamie wants me to look cool too.

Jamie and I made our way to their fitting room in Santa Monica about a month ago. We have tried at home try-on kit, but it did not feel right. All my groomsmen live across the country; it is not like we can all meet up one afternoon to get fitted for my wedding. I needed a solution that would work for everyone. There was no stress when we walked in, and everything was ready for me when I got there based on the profile I set up online. The future is awesome.

After trying on a few suits and tuxes, Jamie and I decided on a classic and simple look. I feel great in what we picked out. The tux is so fancy and well crafted; and for a dude who wears nothing else but band tee shirts, Vans, and denim, this is a significant upgrade. I am a pretty easy customer, but this experience made me feel like a million bucks.

Friday 6-Pack...

June 08, 2018 by Matt Bates

This week we have some new Menzingers. These guys are hometown heroes in the scene I grew up and played music in. I am so glad to see them still touring, creating, and most importantly, thriving. We also have a throwback to old New Found Glory which came through as a request, but I am not complaining! You can catch them on their current Sick Tour along with some other pop-punk legends. We also have a new, new track from Los Angeles locals, Point North off their debut EP. This playlist also has some new surprises from Like Roses, Gold Steps, and Mood Lights! Check it out now!

Music saves.

Listen, enjoy, and share!

Bachelor Party...

June 03, 2018 by Matt Bates

"Should we start a fight?" - My Dad.

It has been one week since my bachelor party. It is insane how fast time flies. I wait our entire lives for some moments, and in an instant, they are over. It has already been a week, and I wish I could go back to last weekend and relive the entire experience. Spending time with my family and friends is a luxury, and I often forget how special it can be.

We got off our red-eye flight from LAX to Philadelphia and immediately were reinvigorated. The sweet scent of the trash-filled air, the grit of the Philadelphia TSA, and the gray, overcast weather connected us right back to our roots; we are home. Someone pushed past us as we made our way through the terminal. They yelled something along the lines of, “Get the fuck out of my way, you pussies!” Philadelphia is a beautiful place.

A Wawa trip and a nap later and we were ready to get onto the festivities that were planned for us by friends and family. Every time Jamie and I head back to our home state of Pennsylvania; we immediately split up to see our different groups of friends and family. It is pretty incredible that I don’t see her until we meet back up at the airport days later at the end of the trip. We live together. I see here every day, but when we get back home to see our parents, we just wave goodbye and do our own thing.

I woke up from my nap on my mom’s couch and immediately had a beer. I am on vacation. It is my bachelor party weekend. I plan on being at least buzzed the entire time. Since I do not really drink anymore, I had to spend the week leading up to my bachelor party doing shots every night to rebuild my tolerance. I chatted with my mom for a while over a 10 am brew and decided to make my way over to my dad’s house. For those of you who have no idea who my father is, let me give you a quick rundown. He believes he is a 21-year-old and he also believes it is the year 1986. He usually is shirtless and wearing ripped jeans or something he found on the side of the road. He will drink you under the table and steal your woman. Motley Crue and Talking Heads are usually what is listening too. He loves to wander the neighborhood with his metal detector and can’t be caught without a beer in his had no matter what time it is. So, you can see why I would want to hang out with him immediately.

We spent the afternoon looking through his raised vegetable garden, playing frisbee, and taking down two 6-packs. The level of relaxation that we achieved was nothing short of incredible. I put my phone down and forgot about it. When was the last time you did that? I was fully immersed in the relaxation aided by the help of cheap American, canned beers.

I passed out for a long sleep sometime in the early night. We had to be up early for golf with the entire bachelor crew the next morning. Some of the bachelor party had never golfed a day in their lives. If you think my dad has golf, owns an acceptable pair of golf pants (or any pants for that matter), or knows the etiquette of golf, you’d be dead wrong. He showed up in his best-ripped jeans shorts and a case of Narragansett - safely stowed in a soft cooler of ice. We were ready to hit the links.

It is safe to say we finished all the beer and almost got in a fight on the 11th hole. By the time we reach the 11th, we were all a little drunk and taking our time aiming our shots. The foursome behind us yelled something along the lines of, “Hurry the fuck up, you drunk fucks!” None of us were having it. We were all in good moods and no one was going to stop us. All of us yelled back all the obscenities we could remember and were willing to start a fight in the middle of the course. I mean really, why would you start a fight with a group of drunk, blue collar, Philadelphia working men celebrating a bachelor party? “Fuck you, you mother fucking, fuck! I’ll shove this golf club down your throat if you say another god damn word! It’s my son’s bachelor party!” My father yelled. “Should we wait and beat the shit out of them? I got time.” My father asked all of us. I am not going to lie, there was a bit of a pause from all of us but we opted to keep the good vibes going and moved along, but not before we flipped them all of and threw shit at them for the remainder of the game. They never said another word and put up with our antics for the rest of the game.

Over the weekend, my family and friends all went golfing, drank, talked shit, and had a blast. All of my closest friends live across the country now. It was great to see those who had flown in to celebrate our upcoming wedding. For some of us, we hadn’t been home together in years, and we picked up right where we left off. These relationships are special. It is rare to find people that genuinely care about you and want to celebrate what you are doing. It is even harder to find someone who will care about you for decades to come. It is times like these where you learn who is in it for the long haul with you, and who was there for a few short bus stops.

Thanks, Mom...

May 13, 2018 by Matt Bates

Mom,

Thanks for allowing me to be me, challenging me to do better, and holding me accountable when I was a complete idiot. I did not know it at the time, but you were doing your best to make sure I would grow up to be a good man. I thought you were being mean by making me do my homework immediately when I got home from school. I thought you were just a tyrant when you gave us a curfew. I thought it was ridiculous how we would have to finish a list of chores before we could do anything or go out with our friends, but now I appreciate it.

I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable Mother's Day. We wish we could be there to help you celebrate. We look forward to seeing you in a few weeks!

Love you and have a great day!

November 18th, 2013

November 18, 2017 by Matt Bates

On this day four years ago, Jamie and I left everything we knew about the comforts of home, living with parents, and hit the road for Los Angeles. We drove through the early morning, hit one of the worst storms we had ever seen that pushed our SUV and trailer off the road, and finally ended up in Nashville, TN. This was the first stop on our first cross-country trip together. The next few days tested our relationship, forced us to think as a team and left us with memories we will never forget.

If you would have told me on that morning that we would both advance our careers, move to Nashville, get engaged, buy a home, and then move back to Los Angeles before 2018; I honestly don't know what I would have said. Maybe I would have said "Hell yeah!" Who knows.

Nashville now holds an extraordinary place in our hearts. This is where we bought our first house that we turned into a home. During that first stay in 2013, we hit a storm that delayed our drive for hours and we were in terrible spirits when we finally got to the city. The second we got out of the SUV, our moods changed. We heard the music, saw the lights of downtown and wanted to be apart of it. We had a blast "honky-tonkin" and hitting all the bars up and down Broadway.

Here is to reflecting, learning, and loving.

This is 30.

This is 30.

Three Decades...

March 05, 2017 by Matt Bates

I turned 30.

30, from what I am told, is a huge milestone in life. I haven't felt any different. I haven’t felt older than 17 since, well, I was 17. I have always been one of the youngest in my friend circle, but now the youngest is 30. Which is crazy to think about, especially when I look through our group texts it only consists of dick and fart jokes. How could we all be 30? Or at least 30? Homeowners? Business owners? Contributing members to society when we all still dick around so much? Like, way too much, and always take the joke way to far.

By the time my parents were 30, I could speak to them in full sentences and was doing homework. I, on the other hand, have moved across the country twice, lived in 3 states, and still have no idea what I want to do when I grow up. And, I don't mind that. I like adventuring. I like who I am, what I get to do daily and where I am with life.

It feels good. I like being 30 so far. There has been a bit of an awakening. I feel motivated to make some changes. I don’t know what those changes are yet, but I have a feeling I will know soon. I feel even more open to new experiences and ideas. I have always had a sense of confidence that has helped me get where or what I wanted out of life. 30 is going to be pretty rad.

Here’s to you 30! And all the up, downs, and b-sides that lay ahead.

***Question - Is it lay ahead or lie ahead?***

Mustache Care...

January 08, 2017 by Matt Bates

Mustache care is very important to me. You must have the right tools to ensure the success of your whiskers. It takes time and patience, but well worth the reward.

My great friend Tom from Pugilist sent me an awesome care package this week to make sure my handlebars are well maintained. Not only does Pugilist make malleable products for all kinds of men's grooming, it also makes my snot mop smell incredible. All day I enjoy the fresh scent of a citrus grove or cedar. Makes for a great day.

Check 'em out! They have tons of great info, tutorials and products!

Five Years...

November 13, 2016 by Matt Bates

Five years. This is a huge moment and milestone in my career. I am proud to work for a company that continues to innovate the way Apple does. I have grown more than I thought possible over the last half decade both personally and professionally. I am humbled, honored and lucky to have found a place where I feel challenged and appreciated daily. A collaboration like this is hard to find.

When I walked through the doors for the first time I was looking for a steady paycheck. Since then I have moved to across the country and back again. I have been encouraged to take on numerous roles throughout the years and coached along the way. Through these opportunities, I have sharpened life-long skills that make me a better person. I have made life long friends along the way that have no idea how much they mean to me. Thank you all.

This journey is just beginning. I am a true believer in you get what you give. The second I started treating my employment like I gave a damn, I got more. The more I gave, the more satisfaction and opportunity I got. I am also a believer in mentorship along the way. Thanks to anyone who poured into me over the last few years and I hope that one day I can pay you back for all you have done for me.

This accomplishment an awesome moment in my life, and I look forward to what the future brings.

One Week To Go...

April 17, 2016 by Matt Bates

“I did not think I would be this emotional over a car.” - Me.

Jamie and I are in our final week of the life we built for ourselves in California. When we moved from Pennsylvania all the way to Santa Monica we thought we were adults, but now I realize that we still had a lot to learn. This time around moving is more stressful than before. Our apartment is the place that protected us, was our roof and the constant when everything was falling apart around us. It is becoming surreal as we pack up boxes and take down the memories we put up on the walls.

This week I sold my car that I have had for 1/3 of my life. That car and I have been up and down both North American coasts and across the country. It was my home for a night when I moved out of my mom's house, and it was the car that took Jamie and me on our first date. Ole Trusty took me to countless band practices and shows. She was one of the most consistent things in my life as I went through adolescence and was a luxury I never took for granted. I have made many memories in the car, and I hope she is now making another family just as happy as she made me.

As we get up this morning, we may take one of our last trips together to the beach and possibly our last trip up the PCH to grab some Neptune’s Net. We can always come back, but you never realize how many routines you have or how some things we took for granted that were at our fingertips. I could not be more excited to start the next chapter in our lives together and take Nashville by the horns to see what she has to offer.

But for now…I am savoring every moment I have left in CA.

The awakening...I could run my own company...right?

The awakening...I could run my own company...right?

Becoming my own boss...

February 28, 2016 by Matt Bates

“What the hell am I going to do with my life?” - Me.

Over the last year or so I have really focused in on what I want to do with my life, and I am coming up short. And honestly, I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. I am just happy to be motivated to change. This year I have committed to reading a least one book a month, replacing any wasted time I have scrolling on my phone checking out my friends photos, to see if I can find an answer. Someone recently told me that the average CEO has roughly 7 forms of income. My plan is to get there. Now...how?

Coming from and still being in the middle class I want to figure out how the wealthy got wealthy and how they continued to stay there. I have turned to multiple books, podcast and am continually doing research about how I can make my money work for me. I am finding myself in a classic ‘Where do I start’ scenario. Do I invest in property? And if so, what does that actually mean and where do I get started? What the hell is a bond and what stocks should I get involved in? Should I open a franchise? Where can I find a mentor to guide me?

Help.

First time on the west coast with my whole family...and we went to Disneyland!

29...

February 21, 2016 by Matt Bates

"Holy shit. It's my 29th birthday." - Me

When I was a kid, I thought my parents were old and wise beyond their years. By the time they were 29, I was 5 or 6. We live in different times now. I feel my generation is spending more time experiencing life and trying to plan a little more. We kind of have to…but that is a whole different conversation.

The last year of my 20's, and I am excited. I use to care about getting older. When I turned 23 or 24 I thought my life was over. I broke down in a diner 3 miles from my childhood home at 2am. I just stared at my Liberty Bell shaped waffle, “I am so old, what have I done with my life.” What the hell was I thinking?

As I get older now I realize I don't feel any different. I mean, sometimes, I think 2007 was last year and I haven't felt older than 16 for as long as I can remember. I feel I am more mature now, well sometimes, dick and fart jokes will never go out of style. I feel I have learned lessons and know how valuable a dollar is now more than ever (thanks LA…you have taught me you can change anyone for anything at anytime.).

I woke up on my 29th birthday surrounded by loved ones 3,000 miles where we all met. It is a great feeling. Waking up in Anaheim...about to hit Disneyland...this is a great day.

Holy crap. It 4:29pm on October 21, 2105, Marty is here somewhere and now I live in California...if I could only actually find Hill Valley, CA...

October 21, 2015 actually happened. And...I am 28, without a hoverboard, Mr. Fusion on my Ford Focus or self tying laces on my Nike's...that I can't afford. My child self would be so disappointed...shit, who am I kidding, I AM disappointed.

Regardless...

From a thanksgiving dinner...yes, not a halloween dinner...thanksgiving...

From a thanksgiving dinner...yes, not a halloween dinner...thanksgiving...

Back to the Future,

Thank you for being awesome and for having such a huge impact on my life. From the time I saw Marty crank that amp when I was 5 and get blown across the room, I knew I wanted to play music...and never lose my imagination. You are always there for me on TBS on a cold fall day when I felt sick and did not want to leave the couch. You taught me to make wise decisions, stand up for what I believe in and although being called a chicken does suck...that it really doesn't matter in the end.

You have provided me with guidance and years of repeated entertainment. This day might come and go, but it does not end the adventure for me.

Thank you for everything, I look forward to seeing you soon and I will always remember, if Flea asks me to go along with a plan...I won't.
